Visiting Norway
Surrounded by mountains and at the head of a 110 km fjord, Oslo is the oldest of the Scandinavian capitals. The 14th century castle on
the headland overlooks the fjord and harbour, and other historical buildings blend with the modern in this vibrant and cosmopolitan
small city. Oslo has strong music, arts and cultural traditions, and the country boasts the father of modern drama Henrik Ibsen, the
painter Edvard Munch, and the composer Edvard Grieg.
There are jetties and beaches along Oslo’s fjord, and many parks and hiking trails. Norway’s temperate forests are often covered in a
carpet of wild flowers at this time of the year, and the wooden churches and colourful houses of the small towns must be seen. Across
the country high mountains meet deep fjords that extend up to 200 km inland, carved deep by ice and fed by thousands of rivers. The fjords
create a jagged and dramatic coastline of over 20,000 kilometres – all the way to the far north, the land of the midnight sun and the
spectacular Northern Lights.
May is one of the most beautiful months in Norway – mild, fresh, and often sunny. Norway’s Constitution Day on 17th May comprises music,
celebration and children’s parades in Oslo and other towns, with
young and old in costume and national dress.
