Abstract

Objective: Medical students have little exposure to financial issues in office practice. Third-party payment systems, including Medicare for the elderly, Medicaid for the poor, commercial insurance programs, and multiple variations of managed care, are difficult to understand but have a dramatic impact on patient care, physicians' incomes, and clinical decision making, especially patient testing, therapeutics, and referrals.
