This film begins with a short introduction to the anatomy of the heart and the physiology of electrical generation and conduction. The first and second Stannius ligatures interrupt the conduction, which leads to the secondary and tertiary pacemaker centres taking over. Electrical stimuli of the ventricle demonstrate that the heart muscle - unlike the skeletal muscle - cannot be tetanised. When the sympathetic and parasympathetic parts of the vagal nerve are electrically stimulated the characteristic changes in impulse generation and impulse conduction of the heart can be observed.
