Ammanna VHF. Alternatives to dissections as a need for conservation. Presented at: Self financed National Seminar held on 06.03.2018. 2018 Oct:23-25
Abstract
Animal dissection has been routinely practiced in zoology laboratories for decades. There is no way one would fully deserve a degree in zoology without ever touching an animal and impossible to replicate with models. With technological advancements, more countries adopting increased awareness about ethical concerns surrounding dissection, many useful dissection alternatives have been developed. The procurement of animals for dissection causes unnecessary suffering and death and may disrupt their populations and the ecosystems. Hence, there is a urgent need for alternatives for dissections and the educational levels indicates that outcomes pertaining to learning anatomy and physiology can be met by virtual alternatives, and that students’ gained knowledge can be equivalent, and sometimes superior, to traditional dissections.
