Jukes N. Training in Alternatives: Supporting Skills Acquisition for Teachers, Students and Campaigners. Poster session presented at: Alternatives in the Mainstream: Innovations in Life Science Education and Training. 2nd InterNICHE Conference; 2005 May 12-15; Oslo, Norway

Abstract

InterNICHE has organised a number of alternatives training events to equip teachers, students and campaigners with the skills to use and effectively promote a range of progressive teaching aids. In June 2004 InterNICHE National Contacts from across the world self-trained at a seminar in Burg Logra, Erfurt, Germany. Some of the same trained individuals have since trained others at new events in different countries. In August-September 2004 over 400 university teachers were trained at the Alternatives, Animal Welfare and the Curriculum series of seminars held in over 10 cities across India. The project was organised by InterNICHE in conjunction with the World Society for the Protection of Animals (WSPA) and many committed local organisations from across the country. Indian teachers supportive of alternatives each self-trained in a number of curricular-relevant alternatives and demonstrated these in detail to an average of nearly 50 delegates at 10 day-long seminars held across the country. This project was the first of its kind providing training at a national level, opening many new doors to further promoting and implementing alternatives in education in India.
